Mine And Pooja's Questionaire

We had to write a questionaire to find out information on our chosen drama, we asked 25 people between the ages of 15 and 25. while we was doing the questionaire we noticed that there wasn't alot of 22-25 years olds to ask, so we thought we'd change the age to 15-21 instead. This will help us so that we know what to put into our film :)

By doing this questionaire we found out that most people loved pretty women and 50 First dates, we used this in out film because of the complete opposites that you get in Pretty women.
we also found out that most people would prefer to see young people in Rom Com's because they can relate to them in real life.
There were alot of different settings that people wrote down, some were in a Bar, some in resturants but the most popular was school/college/University so that is were our films going to be set.
Music wise there were alot of different types also, Romantic came up alot of times but it wasnt specific enough, some peole wrote RnB and classical so we thought we'd mix the two to show the differences between the characters in our opening piece.
Alot of people said that they dont like the fact that Romantic Comedies always end the same, they said it's to predictable, so with our film we chose to end it abit different, this might be going against the conventions but we have a certain way to pull it off.

Research into 4 openings of films, 3 of my chosen genre: Romantic Comedies and 1 of another genre: Thriller. Here are my Textual Analys of my chosen films.

50 first Dates:
This film starts with Hawian music with the setting of a beach and a sunset, this automaticly made me think of romantic, because it's a typical place that people would think of as 'Romantic'. As the musics playing the credits are in blue with a water effect, this sybolises the job that Henry has as a Vet for Sea animals. It then fades into the kitchen and introduces the film with a pineapple next to it, i think this shows the Hawian side to the film. It then shows a series of women talking about a holiday to Hawii were they all met Henry and shared a wonderful experience with him, theres invisible transions between the different women and as there talking one women starts the sentance then it changes to the other women ending the sentence, this shows that they are all talking about the same man but in different ways it also shows the amount of women he spent the one holiday with, which brings him off as a player and a cheat.

Ghost of girlfriends Past:

The Ugly Truth:
The film starts with a extreme long shot of the city, this shows the audience where the film is going to be set. As the credits begin 'I Kissed A Girl' by Katy Perry starts playing. There is then a long shot of a news helicopter this give me the basic idea that this is important in the film. It also shows the type of job the main character has. The credits then begin and in between the first and second name there is a symbol to represent a girl. There is an over head long shot which shows the posh area witch the main character lives in. There is then a long shot showing the main character rushing out of her home in a business suit. This shows she is very high class. There is then a medium close up of the main character in her car outside of her work place. As she enters her work place there is a long shot to show the type of environment that she works in, also all the other employees put their attention towards her by bring her coffee and talking to her about their personal problems. There is a close up of her facial expressions showing that she really dose car about her employees This shows that she is a very popular character compared to everyone else.

Shut: The Film starts with a black background, a creep piano tunes begins as the credits appear on the screen , the credits are a block font in white, that fades in and out. the screen goes back to black and you hear a man shout 'Fuck you' with panic on his voice in a scottish accent with gun shoots in the background aswell. this makes the viewer seem  more confused and wonders whats going on. Suddenly there is a blurred long shot of a man running franticly through what seems to be a underground tunnel. the camera moves around alot which makes you seem like your running with him, this makes you feel frantic also. the man dressed in a smart suit, with what seems to be a gun and briefcase in his hands, reaches a door, runs through it and there is a close up of the man slamming the door in the camera's face. the screen then goes black again with noises which seem to be the man in pain. the title of the film then appears in the same font as the credits. a extreme close up of another mans eye opening appears, then on top of this it shows the mans surroundings like your looking through his eyes. and then shows the man getting up, this gives an impression like he didn't know where he was and he has been knocked out or unconscious . the camera then focuses on another man medium close up in the same room leaning up against a wall, holding his bleeding belly hurt with an extreme close up of it like he has been shot. the man goes over to him in panic shouting i never shot you. this scene seems very confusing to the viewers and  characters.

Task 2: Research into Existing Products

In a Textual analysis we will be looking at the following things:
-Mise en scene
-Camera angles
-Sound(Diagetic and Non- diagetic)
-Movement
-Editing
-Special Effects
-Shots

We have been focusing on the openings of these three Genre's: Romantic Comedy, Thriller and Horror. We have been comenting on the conventions that appear in these.

Romantic Comedy
When watching the opening sequence of a romantic comedy you would expect to see the two main people introduced but in completly different ways, these are usually the two people that will fall in love throughout the film, it will show the different lives they lead and gives us a basic overview of what their personality is like. You will also expect to hear a song that usually links back to the film which would usualy be something cheerfull. like in Pretty Women, Vivene (Julia Roberts) is a prostitue and her character is introduced with a song by Iggy Pop and the Stooges called Wild One this gives us the better idea of what shes like because of the words in the song.
when watching an opening to a Romantic comedy we also see an establishing shot which shows the background of both characters.

Thrillers
We also watched a series of opening of Thrillers, and from what we have seen they havent all started with the creepy type music, one of them started with a upbeat tune. Thrillers arent ment to scare you there made to make you think. Usually in a thriller you would see the subject, an establish shot of were the film is set, and you would also get a basic out look of what the film is going to be about. One of the openings we watched was called and that had a upbeat opening, which confused me because when you think of thriller you would think of slow, grizzly music but this was different, we then saw the main character drunk in the police station which was more funny than thrilling, but it also made me think why was he in the police station anyway, it then showed him disserpear away from his friend, leaving behind a brown paper bag with angel wings inside, and this is when we start to think about whats goin to happen next.

Horrors
We then watched the openings of different Horrors, which what we saw was expected, the creepy writing at the start, the scary music in the background and the red colours which usually symbolises blood and death. we watched which gave us a better idea of how a horror starts, this particular film started with a young girl sitting on what looks like a hospital bed whispering prayers to herself with loads of wounds on her back, from this we immediately get the picture that shes been seriously hurt, thats when we see a flashback of her running in the woods in the early morning, while shes doing this the music becomes alot more intense and builds up the viewers suspense. she then runs out into the road as a car is driving towards her and as it stops she slaps her bloody hands onto the windows and then disappears. At this point the music ends with a sudden DUN! This usually shows that theres more to the film and makes us want to see whats going to happen next.
